Erie County was established in 1792, after Pennsylvania purchased the Erie Triangle from the U.S. Government for just over $150,000. The land, once part of Allegheny County, was named for Lake Erie and the Eriez Native American tribe. The city of Erie was laid out in 1795 and became an active port by 1801.
Shaped by Lake Erie and strong community roots, Erie has grown through waves of industry, immigration, and resilience. Its history lives on in neighborhoods, architecture, and landmarks.
One of Erie’s defining moments came during the War of 1812. In 1813, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry led a decisive victory over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie, an event still remembered with pride. At the height of the battle, Perry raised his battle flag emblazoned with the words “Don’t Give Up the Ship” and ordered “close action”, severing the British line and leading to the enemy’s surrender. That famous battle flag was stitched by Erie resident Margaret Forster Steuart, her sister Dorcas, and five nieces.
The Erie Maritime Museum tells this story while also highlighting the region’s civilian contributions, military service, industrial innovation, and the legacy of the U.S. Brig Niagara. While the Niagara is currently closed to the public, its story continues to anchor the museum’s exhibits. Visitors can also step aboard the historic schooner Lettie G Howard, which sets sail from the foot of the Bicentennial Tower, bringing the area’s maritime spirit to life through hands-on programs and memorable voyages.
Erie’s three lighthouses are picture-perfect spots for exploring Erie’s maritime history at your own pace.
Completed in 1873, the lighthouse previously housed lighthouse keepers and their families as well as state park managers before it opened to the public in 2015. The lighthouse is still a working aid to navigation. Public and group tours are available.

The North Pier Light is sometimes referred to as a lighthouse, but technically it is a "light structure”. The black and white, 35-foot-tall tower topped by a light was established at its present location in the 1940s and continues to serve as an active aid to navigation.
The North Pier Light is accessible to the public year-round during regular Presque Isle State Park hours of 5 a.m. to sunset. (Pictured, photo by 814 Photo)
The present lighthouse was built in 1867, and was the first commissioned lighthouse along the Great Lakes. The former keeper's house is separate, and serves as a private residence. The light at the top of the tower functions but is not an active aid to navigation. Public and group tours are available.

Along West Sixth Street, Erie’s Millionaires’ Row showcases some of the city’s most stunning 19th and early 20th-century architecture. Once home to the industrialists and wealthy leaders who shaped Erie’s early prosperity, this stretch is now a peaceful, tree-lined avenue where visitors can stroll past grand mansions, carriage houses, and historic churches. Many of the homes remain private residences, but the street itself offers a free, self-guided look into Erie’s golden age.
