Erie’s arts and entertainment scene hums with a down-to-earth energy that spreads from downtown into surrounding neighborhoods. Whether it’s live music, striking art, or memorable shows, creativity here feels effortless and welcoming.
Live performance has been part of Erie’s story for more than a century. The Warner Theatre, a 1930s movie palace built with Art Deco opulence, once welcomed vaudeville acts and silver screen stars and continues to bring a steady lineup of talent to its historic stage. It remains one of only six Warner Theatres in the nation reflecting this art deco style. The Erie Playhouse is one of the oldest community theaters in the nation, and Kellar’s Magic and Comedy Club is an homage to Erie native Harry Kellar, the famed illusionist who helped inspire L. Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz”. Housed in a century-old Masonic Temple, the Performing Artists Collective Alliance (PACA) is a dynamic hub for local artists, musicians, and performers to gather, collaborate, and showcase their work. Live performances flourish at Mercyhurst Institute for Arts and Culture, which brings Broadway icons, world-class musicians, and celebrated performers to Erie each fall and winter.
Supporting local art helps keep Erie’s culture strong and growing. The Erie region has long been a nurturing ground for painters, sculptors, and craftspeople, supported by institutions like the Erie Art Museum, which houses a collection of American ceramics, Tibetan paintings, Indian bronzes, and comic book art from local artists to nationally recognized names. That creative energy spills into galleries and studios like Glass Growers Gallery and Allen Stoneware Gallery, where pieces such as ceramics, beach glass jewelry, and paintings further depict Erie’s artistic spirit. Outside the city, Painted Finch Gallery has a refreshing mix of traditional and modern artworks and connects Erie to the Pennsylvania Route 6 Artisan Trail, featuring more than 400 artisans.
Local events dot Erie's calendar year-round, featuring indie artists and makers, particularly in downtown Erie and Edinboro. Check out the calendar for Gallery Night in downtown Erie, the Edinboro Art and Music Festival, and any number of events hosted by the Erie Downtown Partnership for opportunities to explore their wares.
Throughout the Erie region, neighborhoods are sprinkled with murals that add color and character, reflecting the city’s history and community spirit. They are a powerful way for the region to document its history, celebrate its present, and build a legacy for - and envision - the future. There are more than 100 murals across Erie County, each with a story to share—including “Her Voice, Her Vote” at East 7th and State Street. Created by PennWest Edinboro faculty, alumni, and local art educators, the mural honors the centennial of the 19th Amendment and features women who helped shape Erie’s political history. Explore Erie County’s mural scene with a self-guided tour, featuring many of the area’s most eye-catching works.
Erie has long been home to a wide range of musical talent, with sounds that stretch from jazz and blues to rock, indie, and classical. Live music fills local restaurants and bars year-round, while bigger stages like the Erie Insurance Arena and Warner Theatre regularly welcome national touring acts. A summertime staple, the Erie Blues and Jazz Festival brings local, regional, and national musicians to the open-air setting of Frontier Park. In existence since 1913, the Erie Philharmonic is one of the oldest professional ensembles in the country and offers a rich season of pops and symphonic concerts, alongside youth programs and community events that keep the music going year-round.
The Cultural Loop, a partnership between Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority and the Erie Philharmonic, is a free Saturday evening trolley service connecting you to downtown events and activities. Enjoy complimentary parking at the Intermodal Transportation Center, Liberty Park-N-Ride, or the parking garage at 14th and Holland. For additional information and stop details, click here.
